Jack Bessudo and Dec Simmons have expanded Sugarox Candy Studio from one store in Mexico to more than 3,000 retailers worldwide.
“Candy is really gay. The names are sassy totally on purpose! It’s my nod to our LGBTQ+ community.”
Jack: “We started using Square back when we were in Mexico City. Before we made the move to Austin, one of our goals was — let's start the show and sell them a little in the States. And one of the ways that we did it was through fairs and festivals. And there is an event in Austin, it's called the Pecan Street Festival. So we knew we wanted to set up a booth and we said, okay, how are we going to take payments? I think we saw Square on a trip to a Best Buy or something and it was just the point of sale. So it was how you take credit card payments, which for us was huge because that was the only way that we could have done that. Then it was all super easy to set it up on our phones. And that's how we operated our business the first couple of years remotely.
Dec: “Tracking sales is the best way [we use it now]. We can see who, where, when the sales are coming from. That's a really important tool for us to understand where we need to grow, where we need to advertise, and where we're heading with the business really. And the demographics of who is buying.”
Jack: “What Square does is simplifies stuff that is probably really complicated to do. I mean, we can now say it's simple, but I can't imagine doing it without Square.”
